This tournament honors Mr. Dewain Barber. He has spent 44 years promoting scholastic chess and serving on numerous committees. He is the organizer of the annual Morrison and Staser Scholastic tournaments. He taught chess as a junior high teacher for many years. He also organizes his own National Tournament held every year alongside the US Open...the Barber Elementary Tournament of Champions. Therefore, this tournament will be in the format he always enjoys which is a Non-rated tournament where students can simply "come out and play chess..no keeping score, no clocks, just having fun playing chess...that is what it is all about."
It will be round robin format which means everyone plays everyone else in their grade. The games will be won by checkmate. Trophies will be awarded as they are in his Staser and Morrison tournaments...1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each grade level. Play begins at 9am and stops at lunch which will be approximately from 11:30am-12:30pm. Games will then resume at 12:30 and continue until all games are completed (no later than 3:30pm). The entry fee is $15 in honor of Mr. Barber who wanted kids to be able to afford the tournament, regardless of their economic situation. This $15 is before May 14th. On May 14th or after, the entry is $20. Registration is available online or by flyer.
USCF Rated Sections
We also have USCF rated sections in these tournaments. All players must be current USCF members. The sections are Open, U1300, U900, U500/UNR. The time control for the Open section is G/60; d5. The round times are 9am, 11am, 1:30pm, and 3:30pm. The time control for the Under 1300 section is G/45; d5. The round times are 9am, 10:30am, 12:30pm, 2pm, and 3:30pm. The Under 900 and Under 500/UNR sections have a time control of G/30; d5. The round times for these two sections are 9am, 10:15am, 11:30pm, 1:30pm, and 2:45pm. All USCF rated rounds may begin earlier if all games are completed from previous round and there are no objections. The registration for this USCF rated section is $30 before May 14th. On May 14th or after, the entry is $40. Trophies will be awarded to 1st - 4th places in each section. Boards and pieces will be provided. Please bring your own clocks, scorebooks, and pens/pencils.
Terms of Scholarship: The winners of the scholarships will receive their award money from Hanley Chess Academy payable to the name of that player when he/she provides proof of college entrance. This can be in the form of a class schedule or proof of payment of enrollment. In the case of ties, the money will be divided evenly.
